Plasticized Starch/Agar Composite Films: Processing, Morphology, Structure, Mechanical Properties and Surface Hydrophilicity

Natural biopolymers, which are renewable, widely available, biodegradable, and biocompatible, have attracted huge interest in the development of biocomposite materials. Herein, formulation–property relationships for starch/agar composite films were investigated. First, rapid visco analysis was used to confirm conditions needed their gelation prepare filmogenic solutions. All original crystalline and/or lamellar structures starch agar destroyed, with cohesive compact formed, as shown by SEM, XRD, SAXS. plasticized predominantly amorphous, polymorphs closer that agar-only film. FTIR results suggest incorporation restricted chain interaction rearrangement. The addition increased both tensile strength elongation at break, but improvements insignificant after content over 50 wt.%. Contact angle indicate compared other samples, 4:6 (wt./wt.) film less hydrophilic. Thus, this work shows dominates structure properties composites, best can be obtained a certain ratio. Such polysaccharide tailored mechanical surface hydrophilicity could useful biodegradable packaging biomedical applications (wound dressing tissue scaffolding).
